Market prawns is used to refer to those prawns that we buy for human consumption in the wet market or supermarkets. They are sold by the kilos in dead form and packed on ice to keep them fresh.

Market prawns is a nutritious food for predator fish if you do not like the idea of feeding them live food. You can cut it into small portions if your fish's mouth is not big enough. You can chop them up in very small pieces if you are feeding small fish.

One thing to note is that you must have an established filteraton before you start feeding market prawns, otherwise it can seriously mess up your water! With a good and established filteration, any cloudiness caused by feeding the prawn meat will quickly clear up. If you have predator fish that often do not eat all the meat, you should introduce some tankmates to finish those leftovers.

The main advantage of feeding market prawns is that they don't have disease or parasites that can pass on to your fish. However, one of the most important things to remember when feeding market prawns is that you have to freeze them at least once and defrost them before your feed them to your fish. This is to sterilize them from bacteria and is a very necessary step. At no time should you buy them from the market, bring it home and feed them straight.

Market prawns can also be stuffed with long and thin pellets (such as 'foodsticks') for additional nutrition. The easiest way to do this is to cut the prawn into two and then insert the pellets into the intestinal tracts . While this may sound like a tricky procedure, do it once and you'll see how easy it is.

 

Choosing Market Prawns

It is especially important to get fresh market prawn for your fish because unlike humans, they don't eat them cooked. To choose fresh prawns, look at the shell - it should be translucent and not opaque.
If you can touch the prawn, check that it is firm and not limp. Also, it should feel slippery and not dry due to its fresh slime coat.
